What does an artist do? Who do they do it for? What is the value?

Why?

As I Lay With My Head In Your Lap, is an autobiography of a place. It is designed to be an inclusive public exercise grounded in scheduled art practice that is focused on communication, collaboration and connection. This project is designed to publicly share workflow from concept to object revealing the flaws, missteps, understanding and successes. For me and hopefully the viewer, the purpose of creating within this open format is educational in both making objects and more importantly understanding what has been made and what is the function.

Process
I will create 2 images per month through the foreseeable future resulting in an edited portfolio of 20 images. My personal instagram feed will serve as a sketchbook featuring the day-to-day capture and process decisions. Completed images will be released with a short statement about why this photograph was created, what I hope to convey, how and where it pushes the narrative and whether is it successful.

This project’s failure is 20 strong images with a narrative. They will be lovely, well crafted and for a short time will show up on a wall somewhere. The images will then be boxed up and may resurface when time makes them more interesting. They will be created in seclusion and seen by a very limited group of people who will think they are “pretty good.” The success of this project will illustrate the power of a crafted narrative through the same 20 images and will create connections and dialogue through the content of shared memory, place and experience. It will interest an audience within and beyond the art world creating common ground.
