Sun Slurs

In 2016, coming off a Cajun music spree, I became very interested in listening to and learning about classical music.  Having no background in this world, this proved to be a steep climb. Last year I began to learn to play the cello; as an adult beginner I quickly realized that my contributions to this world would mostly be as a fan. However, as a visual artist, I can provide inspiration and beauty through the rendering of these amazing tools.

I’ve been working with Keller Strings, the local Luther shop here in New Orleans, to develop a run of process-oriented photograms using my personal cello and instruments they have loaned me to perfect the technique and build inventory. These images are camera-less photographs that use light and chemistry to create painterly results. The shadow that is left behind asks the viewer to recall a memory of the object or what that object represents, triggering an emotional response. As music notes are dynamic in nature, always fading to silence, the photogram is a perfect way to render these music-making objects.

Prints: This body of work is handmade in the darkroom using a photogram technique which creates unique one of a kind objects that are rendered using a variety of 19th century processes including Silver Gelatin, Platinum, Cyanotype and Lumen prints. These 19th and 20th century process provide the highest print standards in analogue photography achieving unparalleled resolution and tonality while having long proven archival standings. All images are checked for perfection, stamped, titled, and signed in verso.
