Ash Wednesday and Miss Havisham’s Torn Dress

March 06, 2020

I always love when it rains on Ash Wednesday; it’s a great cleansing finality to a long carnival season with the added benefit of allowing everyone time to take a breath and really start New Year’s resolutions.

As fun as it is to create and descend into chaos, I have a real enjoyment of the slow rebuilding process as well; if timed right there is an excitement to it. It’s a balance - in this city you’ll need a little chaos to fit in and a good amount of discipline to not get eaten alive.

A friend looked at this image a few weeks back and cleverly commented “oh that’s Miss Havisham’s torn wedding dress from Great Expectations.” What a great illustration of “what if Mardi Gras just kept going?” After all there are only so many of those costume repair people on Mardi Gras day.
