Fantasy / Reality

May 09, 2020

A few years back I discovered an unusual part of New Orleans called Rivertown. It has an operational Main Street that is a fabrication of previous time periods. Rendered vignettes of the 1950s, 19th century and medieval times can be found within walking distance.

For the past few weeks I’ve been trying to make an image there. The setting is ripe with possibility, but a run down castle surrounded by a white picked fence is too strong of a metaphorical pull to pass on. The content of the scene is split between two time periods, neither of which are our own, but still ones that create a fantastical tension. However, the real success of the image is brought in by the viewer. Is this an image of reality striving to be fantasy or fantasy disguised as reality?
